Has anyone tried Gold injections? I am running out of options to go with the Humira (anti-TNF) in order to try and get off the steroids as they are messing up my liver!!

I am re-trying sulfasalazine - but so far it's been a disaster. Will give it one more try next week.......

My rheum consultant in her letter said about trying Gold if the sulfasalazine doesn't work - so I thought I'd better gather some opinions!!

Most of the other drugs have had to be ruled out as I now have a lung problem (bronchiectasis) - which the Rheum consultant says is genetic and the Respiratory consultant is caused by the RA!!!!

Any experiences of Gold would be appreciated, as I know it is a little used drug now as it is quite old.

Gentle hugs to you all

Ancient history med this one Anne.

Met a few older patients on it, the probs on it I've seen are kidney things and mouth ulcers.

It's not the most powerful dmard and I'm aware that drugs like mtx superseded it. So I've stepped away from it.
There is another one, Penacilamine
And azothyaprin

So there are a few more

Hi Jenni

Penaciliamine was the only other one mentioned. Any ideas on what that one is like?

I have tried azathyoprine and that's probably what partly caused the lung problems!!

Hi Anne

Gold injections were the first line of treatment for me in 2002. I had them monthly for about two years, I had enough gold in me to make a gold necklaceBigGrin

They worked really well at first but then they completely stopped working. I had no side effects at all, unlike all the other drugs I have taken. Blood tests were done every month to check my kidneys and liver, sometimes I had protein in my urine so the gold injection was delayed until it cleared. The injection really stung but no more than anti-tnf. I am not sure if they still use gold injections now but it's worth finding out.

Best of luck
Love
Rebecca

Hi,
It's curious how different consultants have their own favourite drugs and theories!!
I have heard that gold and penicillamine cause lung problems. I am now on
azathioprine and it calmed my lungs down wonderfully well. Personally I wouldnot
have either or the other drugs but insist that is my opinion only. There are several
reasons for lung problems and as we know from this forum we all have different
responses to all sorts of drugs. I wouldn't know about genetics as I don't know
my family history. Take care Anne

Hi Anne

That's interesting about Gold and lung problems, as that is why I've been taken off the Azathioprine!!!

The consultants certainly do have different ideas!!

I guess we all respond to the drugs differently. It is so frustrating isn't it.
